2008 PROGRAM
The winners of the 2008 Beyond GreenTM High-Performance Building Awards presented their projects on Capitol Hill on February 26, 2009, as part of an educational briefing for lawmakers and the public. Through a series of presentations and a poster session, the winners addressed the challenges and opportunities for delivering better buildings. The briefing was held in conjunction with the High-Performance Buildings Congressional Caucus (HPBCC).
SBIC delivered the message to the more than 100 attendees from the House of Representatives, architectural firms, and many other organizations, that buildings that are energy efficient, safe, cost-effective, aesthetically pleasing, and very productive places to work and live, are possible now. Congressman Russ Carnahan (D-MO), Co-Chair of the HPBCC, reviewed many of the provisions highlighted within the stimulus bill that support energy efficiency and green building design. With provisions allotted to smart grids, local government initiatives, and renewable energy research, it is evident that decision makers at the federal, state, and local level consider building performance a high priority. Congressman Carnahan told the audience that President Obama’s recent speech also reminded us that even in dark economic times, there can be a focus and a prioritization on clean, renewable energy. The resources and tools to support these efforts are already in place. Additionally, innovation is already occurring in many sectors of the building design and construction industry to support high-performance buildings.
After presentations from the two First Place winners and the Mixed-Use Facility winner in Category A, Jack Armstrong, SBIC Board Member and Master of Ceremonies for the event, presented awards to this year’s distinguished projects. Armstrong described each of the projects and provided feedback from the program jury. Following the ceremony attendees had the opportunity to get a closer look at each of the projects during an informal poster session and Q&A with this year’s winners.
